This action took place in the Glorietta Pass in the New Mexico Territory on March 28, 1862 and is sometimes referred to as the "Gettysburg of the West". The Federal troops were comprised of six companies of the First Colorado Infantry, two artillery batteries, and detachments from the First and Third Cavalry regiments. They faced what was known as the Confederate Army of New Mexico, a group of 1,000 men, mostly Texans. After a relatively short but heated battle, the Federals withdrew. However, the Federal Army had flanked the Confederate troops and burned their supply wagons. Although the Confederates were left holding the field of battle, the loss of their supply wagons ended their march through the New Mexico Territory caused this battle to be regarded as a Federal victory. The collapse of the New Mexico campaign ended the Confeederacy's plan of expansion to the Pacific, and for the duration of the Civil War, the American Southwest remained firmly in Union control.
