By April of 1865, Selma, Alabama was the last great manufacturing center of the beleaguered Confederacy. Yet even the matchless Nathan Bedford Forrest was unable to stop the inexorable assaults of Union General James Harrison Wilson and his troopers as they broke the Confederate defenses and destroyed the final bastion of southern arsenals.
